*Leanne Simpson writes: “The idea of my arms embracing my grandchildren and their arms embracing their grandchildren is communicated in the Nishnaabeg word, kobade. According to Elder Edna Manitowabi, kobade is a word we use to refer to our great grandparents and our great grandchildren. It means a link in a chain – a link in the chain between generations, between nations, between states of being, between individuals. I am a link in a chain. Three films connected to the waters of Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg territory.
From Teachings of Sacred Water to the Food that Grows on the Water (Manoomin), these films explore the past, present and future of the lifeblood of this territory.

As an Elder and a water activist, Dorothy Taylor shares Sacred Water Teachings that call for action to bring balance to the world.

Dancing the past and future waterways of salmon migration in Michi Saagiig territory.

Cottagers and Indians (45 minutes)
A CBC Docs POV from by Drew Hayden Taylor, currently streaming on CBC Gem.
James Whetung is claiming his Indigenous right to cultivate wild rice on Pigeon Lake. Unfortunately, Manoomin, when grown, sprouts a good two feet out of the water. This limits boating, fishing and swimming, and some full-time residents and cottagers claim it brings down property values. James Whetung and his supporters feel that's a small price to pay for the reestablishment of a traditional mainstay and way of life.

The screening will be followed by a pre-recorded panel discussion moderated by Jenn Cole featuring Anne Taylor and Drew Hayden Taylor from Curve Lake and curator Cara Mumford.

Where are the films available?
All films are accessible through ReFrame Film Festival’s Virtual Theatre for the Elders Gathering on the Eventive website: https://watch.eventive.org/eldersgathering. You can screen the films directly from your laptop/desktop or mobile phone.

How do I order tickets?
Order films by clicking on the “Pre-order now for free” button in the middle of the page and entering your email address. If you already have an Eventive account, it will then ask for your password. If you are new to Eventive, it will ask for your full name and a password to set up a free account to watch these films.

How do I access the films?
You will receive an email with instructions to access the film after purchasing free tickets to a screening, as well as a reminder email with a link when the screening becomes available.
